What Pac-Man World is

Namco built Pac-Man World for the character's twentieth anniversary in 1999, and the brief was awkward: turn a maze game with no story into a 3D platformer. The solution was to keep the vocabulary - pellets to collect, ghosts to avoid, power pellets that flip the relationship - and rebuild everything else around jumping and exploration.

It works better than it has any right to. Pac-Man gets a butt-bounce and a dot-throw, the levels are built as loops rather than corridors, and the ghosts still chase you until you eat a power pellet and they still turn blue and run. The identity survives the genre change, which is the part most licensed platformers of that era got wrong.

How it plays in your browser

The main Quest mode runs across six themed areas, each ending in a boss. Levels hide letters that spell PACMAN plus a set of fruit, and collecting everything is what unlocks the extras rather than simply padding a completion percentage.

The compilation also carries the original 1980 arcade Pac-Man and a separate maze mode, so the disc covers both halves of the character's history. If the platforming is not landing for you, the arcade game is two clicks away.

Tips worth knowing

  • The butt-bounce is not optional. Several routes are gated behind breakable tiles that only it can open.
  • Collect the six PACMAN letters in each level as you go. Backtracking for them once you have reached the exit is far more tedious than picking them up in passing.
  • Power pellets still work exactly as they do in the arcade game - eat one and go hunting rather than running.
  • The dot-throw has more range than it looks. Use it on enemies across gaps instead of trying to jump to them.
  • Falling is the most common way to die, not enemies. Slow down on the narrow sections.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pac-Man World a maze game or a platformer?

A 3D platformer, built for the 1999 anniversary. The original arcade maze game is included separately on the same disc.

Does it include the original Pac-Man?

Yes. The 1980 arcade game is on the disc alongside the platformer and a dedicated maze mode.

Is it suitable for kids?

Yes. It is a bright, non-violent platformer with no objectionable content, and one of the more family-friendly titles in the PS1 catalogue.

How long does it take to finish?

Around six to eight hours for the main quest, longer if you are collecting every letter and fruit.
