Project: Horned Owl
Project: Horned Owl is a first-person rail shooter developed by Alfa System and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation. It came out in Japan in December 1995 and in North America in 1996. You pilot a giant police mech as officers Hiro Utsumi or Nash Stolar, fighting a terrorist group called Metalica across five levels of Metro City. Character and mech designs are by manga artist Masamune Shirow, with anime cut-scenes by Movic, and it supports light gun, mouse and two-player co-op.

What Project Horned Owl is
Project Horned Owl is a 1995 PlayStation light gun shooter, released early in the console's life when Sony was still demonstrating what the hardware could do. You pilot armoured mechs through a near-future city, and the game is played on rails: the camera moves for you, and your job is to clear what appears.
It is a genuinely obscure title, and that is most of its appeal now. It sits alongside Time Crisis and the Namco light gun catalogue as an example of a genre that filled arcades for a decade and then largely disappeared once home consoles moved to analogue sticks and free aiming.
How it plays in your browser
The structure is straightforward - targets appear, you clear them, the rail advances - and the interest comes from target density rather than movement. Because you cannot reposition, everything rests on reaction speed and on prioritising which threat to deal with first.
Like the rest of the light gun catalogue, it was designed around a peripheral most people no longer own. Playing it with normal controls changes the feel but not the structure, and it remains a short, focused game that does not ask for a long commitment.
Tips worth knowing
- Prioritise anything already aiming at you. Targets that have not committed to a shot can wait.
- Rail shooters reward learning the sequence. A second run is almost always dramatically better than the first.
- Do not chase every target on screen. Clearing the dangerous half fast beats clearing all of it slowly.
- Short sessions suit this game. It was built for arcade attention spans and it does not improve with grinding.
Frequently asked questions
What kind of game is Project Horned Owl?
It is an on-rails light gun shooter for the PlayStation, released in 1995. The camera moves along a fixed path and you shoot what appears.
Do I need special hardware?
No. It was designed for a light gun peripheral, but this version is played with your standard controls in the browser.
Is it similar to Time Crisis?
Same genre and era, different design. Time Crisis is built around a cover mechanic and a countdown timer; Project Horned Owl is a more conventional rail shooter.
Is it suitable for younger players?
It is a mech shooter with no graphic content, but it is a shooting game, so that is the judgement to make.
