Road Rash: Jailbreak
Road Rash: Jailbreak is a motorcycle combat racing game for the Game Boy Advance, developed by Magic Pockets and published by Electronic Arts in 2003. It is a handheld version of the 2000 PlayStation game and the last release in the Road Rash series. As in earlier games, you race rival bikers on open roads and can punch them or hit them with weapons to slow them down, while trying to avoid the police.

What Road Rash: Jailbreak is
Road Rash began on the Sega Genesis in 1991, and its mix of motorbike racing and roadside brawling made it one of EA's best known series of the 1990s. Jailbreak first appeared on the PlayStation in 2000, made by EA Redwood Shores, and the Game Boy Advance version by Magic Pockets followed three years later.
Compared with older entries, Jailbreak puts more weight on racing than on fighting. Courses are assembled from a larger network of connected roads, so different races share sections but start and finish in different places. The game offered several modes, including Jailbreak, Five-O, Time Trial and a Sidecar mode. The GBA release received average reviews, with a Metacritic score of 67.
How it plays in your browser
You ride against a pack of opponents and need to finish near the front. Winning earns points you can put towards upgrades, while finishing last earns nothing, and getting caught by the police costs you points. That makes each race a balance between attacking rivals and simply riding clean.
Pulling alongside another rider lets you swing a punch or a weapon to knock them back or off their bike. They can do the same to you, so watch for riders closing in from behind. The GBA emulator on this page handles the scaling road effects smoothly, and a gamepad makes steering and attacking at the same time easier.
Arrow keys steer, Z and X are the main Game Boy Advance buttons for accelerating and braking, and Q and E cover the shoulder buttons used for attacks.
Tips worth knowing
- Only fight when it gains you a place. A clean line through corners is often faster than a scrap.
- Attack riders from the side and move away straight after, before they can hit back.
- Keep an eye out for police bikes. Being caught costs points you need for upgrades.
- Put your first upgrade points into speed and handling, which help in every race.
- Learn the shared road sections, because they appear in several races with different start and finish points.
