Robots
Robots on the Game Boy Advance is based on the 2005 animated film from Blue Sky Studios. Developed by Griptonite Games and published by Vivendi Universal Games in February 2005, it follows young inventor Rodney Copperbottom from Rivet City to Robot City. Instead of a straight run of levels, the GBA version is an exploration platformer in the Metroidvania style, where new weapons and upgrades open up parts of a large connected map.

What Robots is
Rodney arrives at Robot City's train station hoping to meet his hero Bigweld, only to be thrown out of Bigweld's factory by Phineas T. Ratchet. Underground he meets the Rusties, a group of outdated robots, and learns that Bigweld has disappeared. The story leads to Bigweld's mansion and a showdown with Ratchet and Madame Gasket, who plan to scrap older robots.
Griptonite made both handheld versions of the game, and the GBA release took a different path from the console games. It gives you a sizable world map to explore, with bosses that reward upgrades and hidden parts spread across the city.
How it plays in your browser
Early on you earn the Scrap Launcher by delivering an item in the first area. Later you pick up the Magnet Bomb, which pulls enemies towards it and can hit certain switches, and an electric weapon that does heavy damage and powers up switches of its own. Each weapon can be upgraded to increase its damage and range.
Because areas are locked behind specific weapons, you will often see a switch or passage you cannot use yet. Making a mental note and returning later is part of the game. The GBA emulator on this page runs the US version, and the larger view of a browser window makes the detailed sprites easier to read.
Arrow keys move Rodney, Z and X are the Game Boy Advance A and B buttons for jumping and using weapons, and Q and E act as the shoulder buttons.
Tips worth knowing
- Remember locked doors and odd switches. A weapon you find later is usually the key.
- Use the Magnet Bomb to group enemies together before attacking them.
- Put upgrades into the weapon you use most so fights go faster.
- Search side paths for hidden parts, since they add up to useful improvements.
- Watch a boss for a full attack cycle before committing, then strike during the gaps.
