What Street Fighter Collection is
Street Fighter Collection is Capcom's 1997 two-disc compilation for PlayStation, and it is a better package than the name suggests. It carries Super Street Fighter II, Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold - three genuinely different games rather than three versions of one.
Alpha 2 Gold is the reason collectors chased this release. It adds characters and tweaks that were not in the standard Alpha 2, and outside this compilation it was difficult to get hold of for years. Having it sit next to Super Turbo, arguably the most respected competitive fighting game ever made, is what gives this disc its reputation.
How it plays in your browser
All three games run under PS1 emulation here. Super Turbo is the fastest and least forgiving of them, with tight timing windows and combos that punish a single dropped input. Super Street Fighter II is the slower, more readable version and the sensible place to start if you are new to the series.
Alpha 2 Gold plays differently again. It has a Custom Combo system that lets you spend meter on a burst of chained attacks, which changes what a round looks like - defence matters more, and a full meter is a threat in itself.
Tips worth knowing
- Start on Super Street Fighter II, not Super Turbo. The slower pace gives you time to actually see what your opponent is doing.
- Quarter-circle motions want a smooth roll, not four separate taps. If your fireball is not coming out, you are almost certainly hitting the corners too hard.
- Ryu and Ken exist for a reason. Both have a fireball, an anti-air uppercut and no gimmicks, which is exactly what you want while learning.
- Blocking in the air is not possible in these games. If you jump at the wrong moment, you are committed.
- Alpha 2 Gold rewards holding meter. Spending it the moment it fills is the most common beginner habit and the easiest one to fix.
