Time Crisis: Project Titan is a light gun shooter published by Namco for the PlayStation in 2001, developed with the American studio Flying Tiger Development. Unlike most Time Crisis games, it never appeared in arcades first. VSSE agent Richard Miller, hero of the original game, is framed for the assassination of the president of Caruba and has 48 hours to find the real culprits. The series' duck-and-shoot cover system returns, along with a new way to move between firing positions.

What Time Crisis: Project Titan is

Namco chose to build a new PlayStation game rather than port the arcade Time Crisis II, because the arcade hardware was far beyond what the console could handle. The result took about two years to make and was released in Europe in April 2001, Japan later that month and North America in June 2001. The file on this page carries the Time Crisis II name, but the game itself is Project Titan.

The story sends Richard Miller to the island of Rio Oro, where he uncovers a plot involving the arms dealer Kantaris and the returning mercenary Wild Dog. Project Titan turns out to be a plan to build mechanised battle suits from mined titanium, and Miller has to fight through the operation, uncover what really happened to the president and settle things with Wild Dog.

How it plays in your browser

As in every Time Crisis, you spend the game switching between hiding and attacking. While hidden you cannot be hit but cannot shoot, and hiding is also how you reload. Each area runs on a countdown timer, so staying in cover too long costs you as much as staying out too long. Project Titan adds yellow arrows that appear while you hide; shooting one moves Miller to another position, which can open better angles on the enemies in that area.

The original was designed for Namco's GunCon light gun, which does not work on modern screens, so here you aim with the emulated controls instead. It takes a few minutes to get used to, but the pacing of the stages is the same. Enemies in red uniforms fire faster and more accurately than the others, so they should always be the first target.

Tips worth knowing

  • Duck the moment you see a red-uniformed soldier line up a shot, then pop back out and hit him first.
  • Reload by taking cover whenever there is a lull, even if your clip is not empty.
  • Watch the timer. Clearing an area quickly adds time, while hiding for long stretches drains it.
  • Try the yellow arrows when a spot feels too exposed. The other position often has clearer lines of fire.

What is new compared with the first Time Crisis?

The main addition is the ability to change position during a firefight by shooting yellow arrows while in cover.
