Time Crisis
Time Crisis is Namco's light gun shooter, first released in arcades in 1995 and ported to the PlayStation in 1997, where it came bundled with the GunCon controller. You play VSSE agent Richard Miller, sent to rescue Rachel MacPherson, the president's daughter, from Sherudo Garo and his hired gun Wild Dog. Its main idea was a cover system: you duck to reload and dodge fire, but a timer keeps you moving. The PlayStation version added an original Special Mode with branching routes.

What Time Crisis is
Time Crisis reached arcades in 1995 and the PlayStation in 1997, and it changed what a light gun game could be. Every rail shooter before it asked one question - can you shoot the thing on screen - and Time Crisis added a second: are you willing to be exposed while you do it.
That is the pedal. In the arcade cabinet you stood on a foot pedal to leave cover; let go and your character ducked back behind a wall, safe but unable to shoot or reload. Suddenly the game was about timing your exposure rather than raw aim, and every shooter that followed borrowed the idea.
How it plays in your browser
The PlayStation port keeps the cover mechanic and maps it to a button, so the rhythm survives even without the pedal. You duck to reload, pop out to fire, and read the timer that is always running down. Clearing an area adds time; hesitating costs it.
The pressure comes from that clock rather than from a life bar. You are not slowly being worn down - you are being asked to be decisive, repeatedly, and the game is short enough that a full run fits in a single sitting.
Tips worth knowing
- Reloading happens automatically when you duck into cover, so there is never a reason to stand still with an empty magazine.
- The enemies flashing a warning colour are the ones about to fire. Deal with those first and ignore the rest until they do.
- Shooting the timer icons that appear is not optional on later stages. Missing them is usually what ends a run.
- You cannot be hit while in cover, so when a burst is incoming, going back is always correct.
- The game was built for a light gun. On a keyboard and mouse the aiming is different in feel, so give yourself a stage or two to adjust before judging it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a light gun to play Time Crisis?
No. The original used Namco's GunCon, but this browser version is played with your normal controls - the cover and timer mechanics work the same way.
How long is Time Crisis?
A complete run is short by design, typically under half an hour. It is an arcade game, built to be replayed rather than finished once.
Is there a two-player mode?
The original arcade release and this port are single-player. Later games in the series added co-op.
Why does the timer keep running out?
That is the core mechanic rather than a bug. Clearing enemies adds time, so the game punishes hesitation more than it punishes bad aim.
