Touge Densetsu: Saisoku Battle
Touge Densetsu: Saisoku Battle is a motorcycle racing game for the Super Famicom, developed by Lenar and published by Bullet-Proof Software in Japan on March 15, 1996. The title roughly means Mountain Pass Legend: Fastest Battle. Races take place on twelve mountain roads from around Japan, drawn with Mode 7, and the aim is to chase down a rival and get past without crashing into them. Between races you can pick a bike and adjust its tires, suspension, chain and brakes.

What Touge Densetsu: Saisoku Battle is
Touge racing is the Japanese street-racing style of battling on narrow mountain passes, and this game applies it to motorcycles. Instead of a pack of cars on a circuit, the focus is on a duel: you catch the rider ahead and find a safe moment to overtake on a twisting road.
The game came late in the Super Famicom's life and never left Japan. It uses the console's Mode 7 scaling to draw its twelve courses, and it gives you some control over your machine, letting you choose a model and change parts such as tires, suspension, chain and brakes to suit a course.
How it plays in your browser
This page runs the Japanese cartridge through the Snes9x emulator, so you can start racing without a download. Menus are in Japanese, but the racing itself needs no reading: accelerate, brake and lean through corners.
The challenge is in the passing. Colliding with your opponent costs time and momentum, so the best approach is to follow closely through a run of bends and pick an exit or short straight where there is room to get by.
Tips worth knowing
- Brake before a corner rather than in the middle of it; carrying a clean line out of a bend matters more than entry speed.
- Do not try to pass on the inside of a tight turn where the rival is also heading; wait for a straight or a wide exit.
- Avoid contact with your opponent, since a collision loses more time than following for a few extra corners.
- Experiment with tires and suspension in the setup screen if a course feels twitchy or the bike runs wide.
- Learn one course well before moving on; memorising where the sharpest bends come makes overtaking much easier.
