What makes a game an arcade game

Arcade games were shaped by a constraint no other genre had: the machine had to earn. A cabinet in a busy room had perhaps ten seconds to explain itself to someone walking past, and it had to end runs often enough to keep the coins coming. Almost everything that defines the form follows from those two pressures.

That is why arcade games start instantly, teach through play rather than text, and get hard quickly. It is also why they are so well suited to a browser tab decades later. Playing on school or low-end hardware
