Cybernator
Cybernator is a side-scrolling mech action game for the Super Nintendo, developed by NCS and released in North America by Konami in 1993. It first came out in Japan in 1992 as Assault Suits Valken. You play Jake Brain, a marine piloting an armoured Assault Suit for the Federation in a future war over dwindling fossil fuels. The mech can shoot, dash, block with a shield and switch between weapons across a series of missions on the ground, in space and around enemy ships.

What Cybernator is
Cybernator is the second game in the Assault Suits series and works as a prequel to Target Earth on the Genesis. NCS developed it and Masaya published it in Japan, with Konami handling the American release. The story follows a war between two powers, the Axis and the Federation, fought over resources and control of the Moon.
The mech feels heavy and deliberate. It has a limited booster for short flights, a shield that blocks incoming fire, and weapons such as a Vulcan cannon and a laser that grow stronger as you collect power-ups. Missions often have objectives beyond reaching the end, and how well you complete them affects which of the two endings you see.
How it plays in your browser
This page runs the USA SNES release through an emulator, so there is nothing to download. The Western version removed the character portraits from the Japanese original, but the gameplay is the same.
Several buttons are in play at once, so a gamepad with shoulder buttons is the most comfortable way to play, although the keyboard layout covers everything.
Tips worth knowing
- Hold up the shield when enemy fire is heavy. Many attacks are easier to block than to dodge in such a large mech.
- Stick with one or two weapons and power them up, since upgrades add up faster when they are not spread thin.
- Use the booster in short bursts, as it runs out if you keep flying.
- Take time to complete mission objectives rather than rushing ahead, because they affect the ending.
