TMNT
TMNT is the Game Boy Advance game released alongside the 2007 CGI Turtles film. Ubisoft Montreal built it as an original side-scrolling brawler rather than a cut-down version of the console game, and it takes clear inspiration from the old Turtles arcade games. You fight through seven stages across New York, including subway tunnels, rooftops and a moving freight train, using combos, throws and a system that lets you call in a brother turtle for extra help.

What TMNT is
The home console versions of TMNT were adventure games with a lot of climbing and jumping. The Game Boy Advance version went another way. Ubisoft Montreal made a 2.5D beat 'em up with large, well animated sprites, and reviewers at the time liked it far more than its console siblings. IGN called it one of the best brawlers it had played in years.
Raphael carries the opening stages, and after that you can mostly pick whichever of the four brothers you prefer. The story is told through simple still cut-scenes between levels. Between missions you return to the sewer lair, which has a punching bag for practice, arcade cabinets, and a room of mementos earned by meeting combat goals. Experience points raise your stats, and you can spend money on weapons and extra lives.
How it plays in your browser
The game runs through a Game Boy Advance emulator right on this page, so there is nothing to install. Combat only needs the D-pad and two action buttons, which makes it comfortable on a keyboard. Directions combined with attacks give you uppercuts, kicks and back attacks, and a quick double tap lets you roll out of danger.
Enemies can be grabbed and thrown into each other, which is often the fastest way to thin out a crowd. When your gauge is full you can summon another turtle, who jumps in briefly and deals extra damage. Bosses are big and have set attack patterns, so a failed attempt usually teaches you what to watch for next time.
Arrow keys move, and Z and X handle the two main action buttons used for attacks and jumps; Enter is Start.
Tips worth knowing
- Throw enemies into other enemies. It does extra damage and clears space when you get surrounded.
- Save the brother summon for a quiet moment if you are low on health, since calling one with no enemies around drops a pizza that restores health.
- Use the dodge roll instead of trading hits with bosses, and watch for the wind-up before their bigger attacks.
- Visit the lair between stages to spend money on weapons and extra lives before the harder levels.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same TMNT game as the PS2 and GameCube versions?
No. The Game Boy Advance version was built separately by Ubisoft Montreal as a side-scrolling beat 'em up. It shares the film license but plays very differently from the console releases.
How many levels does TMNT on GBA have?
There are seven main stages, with a sewer lair hub between them where you can practise, buy upgrades and view your mementos.
Can I play as all four turtles?
Yes. Raphael leads the early stages, and after that you are largely free to choose between Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo.
Do I need to download anything to play?
No. The game runs in your web browser through an emulator, so you can start playing straight away on a computer.
